Your Automatic WhatsApp Messages Are About to Cost More

Booking confirmations, order receipts and verification codes on WhatsApp are about to carry a price tag from 1 October. Here is who pays, and who does not.

From 1 October, a WhatsApp message that has always been free for your business could start costing money, even when no one typed it. Meta is changing how it prices the WhatsApp Business Platform, the automated layer behind booking confirmations, order receipts and verification codes, and Oman is one of the markets facing the steepest rise. If anything sends WhatsApp messages for you automatically, this week is the week to find out what you are about to pay.

Two WhatsApps, One Price Change

There are really two different WhatsApps for a small business, and only one of them is changing. The free WhatsApp Business app, the one most teams use to chat with customers straight from an owner's phone, stays exactly as it is. This change only touches the WhatsApp Business Platform, the version that booking software, online stores and automated chat tools connect to when they send a message without a person typing it in that moment.

What Changes on 1 October

Since November 2024, an ordinary automatic reply sent inside the 24-hour window after a customer messages first, known as a service message, has cost nothing on the Business Platform. From 1 October 2026, Meta starts charging for every one of those replies. The appointment reminders, order confirmations and receipts that also used to be free inside that same window, called utility messages, lose their free status too.

  • Ordinary automatic replies (service messages): free since 2024, priced from 1 October.
  • Reminders, confirmations and receipts (utility messages): free inside the 24-hour reply window, now priced every time.
  • Verification codes (authentication messages): already priced, and the rate for Oman is going up.
  • Verification codes sent to a customer travelling abroad: a brand new, higher price tier just for that.

Oman is also moving off the regional price list it shared with neighbouring markets onto its own rate card, alongside places such as Kuwait and Morocco. Pricing trackers that follow Meta's published rate card put Oman's per message utility and authentication charge rising from roughly 3.5 baisa to about 9.5 baisa, with the new tier for codes sent abroad priced near 23 baisa a message. Meta had not published a plain public summary page for Oman specifically when this article was written, so treat these as reported figures rather than a fixed promise.

Every automatic message that used to be free on WhatsApp now costs something, even a simple appointment reminder.

Who This Touches, and Who It Does Not

  • Online stores sending a verification code by WhatsApp at checkout.
  • Salons, gyms and clinics using booking software that sends automatic appointment reminders.
  • Tuition centres and rental offices with automatic fee or renewal reminders.
  • Any chat tool that answers WhatsApp automatically, including tools such as Chatbot.OM.
  • Not touched: you, personally, replying from the free WhatsApp Business app on your own phone.

The free WhatsApp Business app on your phone is not part of this change: only the automated tools plugged into it are.

None of this is dramatic per message. What changes is that a habit built on the idea that a reply is free once the customer messages first no longer holds, and every automated message now adds up somewhere on a bill.

What It Could Cost You

What this means for you

Start with your own tools, not with panic. Open every app or service that sends a WhatsApp message on your behalf without you typing it, a booking system, an online store, a delivery tracker, a chat tool, and check which one runs on the Business Platform rather than the free app.

  1. Ask each provider plainly whether Meta's 1 October change is passed on to you, and how much it adds to your monthly bill.
  2. Count roughly how many automatic WhatsApp messages you send in a normal month: reminders, confirmations, receipts, codes.
  3. If you only chat manually from the WhatsApp Business app on your own phone, this specific change does not touch you today.
  4. Budget a small, real increase rather than being surprised by it on an invoice in October.

Quick Answers

Does this affect the free WhatsApp Business app on my phone?

No. Manual chatting from the free app is not part of this change. Only the Business Platform that automated tools connect to is affected.

When exactly does the new pricing start?

From 1 October 2026, based on Meta's rate card for Oman.

Who actually pays the new fee, me or my software provider?

Meta bills whoever holds the Business Platform account, usually your provider or messaging partner, who then decides whether to pass the cost on. Ask them directly.

The Bottom Line

None of this closes WhatsApp as a way to reach customers, and the free app most small teams use for everyday chatting is untouched. But if any part of your business now runs on autopilot over WhatsApp, from October it runs on a small, real bill, and the only way to know the size of it is to ask your provider this week, not in October.
